Armenia’s participation to the 62nd session of UN Human Rights Council

09 July, 2026

The 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) took place in Geneva from 15 June to 8 July 2026.

The agenda of the session included interactive dialogues on thematic human rights issues, as well as on country-specific human rights situations.

Throughout the course of the session, the Permanent Mission of Armenia delivered 29 statements and aligned with 9 Joint Statements.

During the interactive dialogue on the annual report of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, the Permanent Representative of Armenia, Ambassador Hasmik Tolmajian, reaffirmed Armenia's commitment to the protection of human rights and the strengthening of international cooperation. She emphasized that building trust, addressing humanitarian issues—including the release of detained persons, clarifying the fate of missing persons, and ensuring respect for human dignity—are essential prerequisites for achieving sustainable peace in the region.

The statements delivered by the Permanent Mission of Armenia addressed democratic reforms, the right to education, gender equality, freedom of expression, as well as a number of other issues relating to the agendas of social protection, migration and human rights.

During the session, around 50 resolutions were adopted, including resolution on the 20th anniversary of the Human Rights Council, which reaffirms Council's central role in the international human rights system and highlights efforts to further strengthen its effectiveness. Armenia co-sponsored the resolution.

As a member of a core group, Armenia participated in the process of introducing a thematic resolution on the Human Rights Council's Universal Periodic Review (UPR) voluntary funds. The resolution, which was adopted by the Council without a vote, aims to promote the effective participation of States within the UPR process and strengthen their capacity to implement UPR recommendations.

Armenia also co-sponsored a number of important resolutions, including resolutions on the right to education, freedom of opinion and expression, negative impact of disinformation, discrimination against women and girls, rights of persons with disabilities, independence of judges and lawyers and extreme poverty.

Within the framework of the HRC62nd session, Armenia organized a number of side events. In particular, together with France, Estonia, Costa Rica, Chile, Japan, Mexico, and Republic of Korea, Armenia initiated a side event entitled “From Rights to Architecture: Women, Girls, and the Governance of Artificial Intelligence” to discuss the human rights implications of artificial intelligence and related digital technologies for women and girls. The event was organized in partnership with United Nations Working Group on discrimination against women and girls, “Women at the Table” and “Plan International” organizations. The Permanent Representative of Armenia delivered opening remarks at the panel discussion.

In partnership with International Organization of la Francophonie,  a side event entitled "L'Appel de Kigali et l'Égalité Femmes-Hommes: Accelerating Women's Rights within the Francophone Space" was co-organized by Armenia, Morocco, Rwanda, France and Canada. The side event was dedicated to the promotion of women's rights and gender equality in the Francophone space. The Permanent Representative of Armenia delivered closing remarks.

In partnership with the Committee on the Rights of the Child and UNICEF, a side event entitled “Caring in the Shadows: The Urgency of Enhancing the Protection and Empowerment of Young Carers" was co-organized by Armenia, Morocco, Iceland, Ireland, Mexico and the Republic of Korea. The Permanent Representative of Armenia delivered opening remarks.

As a member of the Group of Friends of the UPR, Armenia co-sponsored a side event entitled “UPR Voluntary Funds. Supporting States, Realizing Rights”, during which the Permanent Representative of Armenia delivered closing remarks.

In celebration of World Chess Day, the Permanent Mission of Armenia organized the Second Diplomatic Chess Tournament, which was held under the auspices of the UN Office in Geneva, with the partnership and support of UNESCO, the University for Peace, the International Chess Federation, Geneva Chess Club, the Swiss Chess Federation and the Armenian Chess Federation.

The next session of the Human Rights Council will commence on 7 September 2026.
