Delivered by Mrs. Anush Gharabaghtsyan, Attaché

President,

Armenia welcomes the creation of the UN Working Group on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas. This is an important initiative that can contribute to greater protection of human rights globally.

Agriculture is a key sector of Armenia’s economy, providing around 12% of our GDP and employing over 24% of the workforce.

Our government has made the development of a competitive, efficient and sustainable agricultural sector a top priority. We have adopted a comprehensive 2020-2030 strategy for the economic development of our agricultural sector. The vision is to transform agriculture into an innovative, value-adding industry that is environmentally-friendly and ensures the wellbeing of rural communities.

Specific policy measures include supporting the growth of agricultural cooperatives, investing in agricultural research and extension, promoting the adoption of modern technologies and irrigation systems, and providing affordable financing and insurance mechanisms for farmers. We are also working to diversify rural economies by supporting non-agricultural activities.

We would appreciate if the Working Group can identify specific strategies that it intends to employ to ensure the meaningful participation of peasant and rural organizations in the development of the mandate and its recommendations.

Thank you.
