President,

Armenia thanks Ms Claudia Mahler for the thematic analysis on this critical issue.

Older persons have the inherent right to make decisions about their own lives. Legal capacity is a cornerstone of human dignity as well as the principle of informed consent is essential.

The Armenian Government works on adoption of strategic documents aimed at ensuring active, healthy and dignified aging for our citizens. Among the priority measures, initiatives like Comprehensive Geriatric Assessments, the establishment of Active Ageing Centres, subsidies for senior gym services, and the development of robust palliative care are foreseen.

Various programs and measures have been implemented and legal acts have been established in Armenia to provide social protection for older persons. However, these efforts have been significantly challenged by the substantial flow of refugees to Armenia. In a course of few days Armenia sheltered around 115.000 forcibly displaced people, among them 12.000 older persons.

State institutions caring for older persons and people with disabilities have experienced a 25 per cent rise in residents since the refugee crisis has unfolded.

The Government is undertaking a number of projects for meeting their health needs and facilitating socio-economic inclusion.

I thank you.
