The 56th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) took place in Geneva on June 18 -July 12, 2024.

The agenda of the session included interactive dialogues and panel discussions on issues related to violence against women, extrajudicial executions, freedom of speech, climate change, rights of internally displaced persons and migrants, as well as the impact of modern technologies on human rights. The HRC discussed also the situation with human rights in a number of countries.

During the 56th session the Permanent Mission of Armenia delivered 29 statements and right of replies, as well as aligned with 23 joint statements.

Statements made by the Permanent Mission of Armenia alluded on the blockade of Lachin Corridor and ethnic cleansing of Nagorno-Karabakh. The attention of the UN member states and UN structures was invited to the plight of the Armenian prisoners of war and civilian detainees, extrajudicial executions and torture carried out by Azerbaijan, enforced disappearances and missing persons, vandalism toward the Armenian cultural and religious heritage, manifestations of extreme hatred against Armenians and Armenophobia. It was stressed that Azerbaijan has not complied with the binding orders of the International Court of Justice. Armenia further referred to the occupation of sovereign territories of the Republic of Armenia by Azerbaijan, attempts to falsify and re-write history, and territorial claims made against our country. Armenia also invited attention of the HRC to the restrictions of fundamental freedoms and gross violations of human rights in Azerbaijan.

The Permanent Mission of Armenia presented Armenia’s best practices and achievements in further strengthening democracy in our country, including in the fields of freedom of speech, rule of law, as well as the establishment of a National Mechanisms for Implementation, Reporting and Follow-up in the area of human rights.

Armenia joined the core group of sponsors led by Luxemburg, Sierra Leone and the Dominican Republic of the resolution on Free Preschool and Secondary Education. The resolution was adopted by consensus. It envisages the creation of an intergovernmental working group which will work on additional protocol to the Convention of the Rights of the Child.

Armenia also co-sponsored a number of important resolutions, including resolutions on the freedom of opinion and expression, independence of judiciary, discrimination against women and girls, human rights and climate change.

Armenia co-sponsored the side event held in the framework of the 56th session of the HRC on Free Preschool and Secondary Education.

The next session of the Human Rights Council will commence on September 9, 2024.
