Delivered by Ms. Shogher Sahakyan, Attaché

Mr. President,

We welcome the focus of Special Rapporteur on the situation of child and youth human rights defenders.

Armenia pays particular attention to the role of youth human rights defenders as they play an active role in protecting and promoting human rights. We agree with the SR that promoting free speech in school settings is especially important, as many children first learn about human rights through education. In this context, since 2022 by the order of the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia, the curricula of public educational institutions include the subject "Social Science". It aims at educating children in the fundamental values of democracy, participation and social responsibility.

Furthermore, with regard to the involvement of young people in decision-making processes, the student council attached to the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia was established in 2020, to ensure the students participation in ongoing reforms in the field of public education. As was mentioned in the report of the SR, in Armenia draft laws concerning children and amendments to those laws are discussed with children and young people.

I thank you.
