An Event was Held in Bern on the Occasion of the 30th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic relations between Armenia and Switzerland

On June 7 in Bern a reception dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Swiss Confederation took place, which was jointly organized by the Embassy of Armenia to Switzerland and the Switzerland-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group.

At the invitation of the Switzerland-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group the event was attended by the Head of the Armenia-Switzerland Friendship Group of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Eduard Aghajanyan and members of the Group Andranik Kocharyan, Heriknaz Tigranyan, Vladimir Vardanyan, Maria Karapetyan and Babken Tunyan.

Numerous representatives of the legislative and executive authorities of Switzerland, Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, as well as of the civil society and the Armenian community of Switzerland were present at the reception.

The event was also attended by the President of the Swiss National Council Irène Kälin, Director of the Federal Office for Cultural Affairs Carine Bachmann, Deputy State Secretary for European affairs Patric Franzen.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to Switzerland Andranik Hovhannisyan delivered welcoming remarks. During the reception statements were delivered by Eduard Aghajanyan, as well as Carlo Sommaruga, the Co-Chair of the Switzerland-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group and the Secretary General of the Group Sarkis Shahinian. The speakers highly appreciated the bilateral relations between Armenia and Switzerland, discussed the joint achievements and forthcoming projects, as well as presented the priorities of Armenia.

Ambassador Andranik Hovhannisyan presented the State awards of the Republic of Armenia, the Mkhitar Gosh medals to the founders of the Switzerland-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group Dominique de Buman and Ueli Leuenberger in recognition of their contribution to the development and strengthening of bilateral relations. Dominique de Buman and Ueli Leuenberger expressed their gratitude for the awards and also reflected on the history of the Friendship Group, the achievements and perspectives for further development of bilateral cooperation.

In the course of the visit the members of delegation of the National Assembly of Armenia had working meetings with the President of the Security Policy Committee of the Swiss State Council Werner Salzmann, President of the Committee for Legal Affairs of the Swiss State Council Carlo Sommaruga, President of the Political Institutions Committee Matthias Zopfi, President of the Political Institutions Committee of the National Council Marco Romano, Deputy President of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council Hans-Peter Portmann, as well as with Head of the Swiss Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Damien Cottier.

In the course of the meetings the interlocutors discussed the Armenian-Swiss bilateral relations and exchanged views on the regional developments. The Armenian side presented to the Swiss parliamentarians the Nagorno Karabakh issue and the humanitarian consequences of the 44-day war. An active discussion was held on the mechanisms for the organization and functioning of the direct democracy in Switzerland.

The delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia also held a separate working meeting with the Co-Chairs of the Switzerland-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group.
