“Women Raising the Torch of Humanitarian Action” Side event 45th session of the Human Rights Council

At the margins of 45^th session of the Human Rights Council, Permanent Mission of Armenia and the Delegation of the European Union in cooperation with Aurora Humanitarian Initiative co-organized online panel entitled “Women Raising the Torch of Humanitarian Action”. H.E. Andranik Hovhannisyan, Permanent Representative of Armenia, moderated the webinar.

Discussion gathered world-known humanitarians such as H.E. Mary Robinson, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and former President of Ireland as well as Leymah Gbowee, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Founder and President of Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa.

H.E. Andranik Hovhannisyan, Permanent Representative of Armenia, H.E. Walter Stevens, Head of the European Union Delegation, H.E. Nasir Ahmad Andisha, Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Gillian Triggs, Assistant High Commissioner for Protection of UNHCR, Monica Ferro, Director of Geneva Office of UNFPA and Helen Durham, Director of International law and policy of International Committee of the Red Cross as well as Dr. Vartan Gregorian, Co-founder of Aurora humanitarian initiative and President of the Carnegie Corporation of New York delivered opening remarks.

Panel centered on discussions around the role of women in humanitarian missions throughout history as well as pertinent challenges in the area. Aurora humanitarian initiative presented its history and goals. Discussants highlighted the issues of protection of the rights of vulnerable groups as well as importance of inclusive post-conflict policies.
