Delivered by Mrs. Anush Gharabaghtsyan, Attaché

President,

We thank the Independent Expert for her report.

Armenia has a firsthand experience on the crucial role that the civil society can play in galvanizing the international solidarity and cooperation, especially during the crisis situations. It was especially vivid during the devastating earthquake that struck Armenia in 1988.

The conflict situation too has been a persistent issue for Armenia ever since the independence. Our civil society organizations have played a crucial role in expressing solidarity with the affected communities. They have internationally advocated for the protection of civilians, respect of their human rights, and the prevention of further violence and displacement.

The Armenian civil society has a rich history of grassroots activism and solidarity dating back to the 19th-20th centuries. It has not been confined to Armenia itself but has extended worldwide to the countries that host Armenian communities. This international solidarity contributed to the establishment and development of the Republic of Armenia.

The Armenian civil society was instrumental in advocating for democratic reforms and positive changes domestically. The Civil Society Organization Sustainability Index ranked Armenia’s civil society as the second most sustainable in the Eurasian region.

I thank you.
