Delivered by Ms. Nelli Petrosyan, Human Rights Officer

President,

Armenia shares the conviction of the Special Rapporteur that discrimination by denying people’s access to food, and to means and entitlements for its procurement, is an instance of violence. In this regard, it has been 3 months that Azerbaijan continues to grossly violate the human rights of Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh by illegally blocking the Lachin corridor - the sole transport road connecting Nagorno-Karabakh to the outside world.

120.000 Armenians are deprived of access to food, medicine and other basic goods. Supermarkets and grocery stores are empty. Bakeries are running out of ingredients to prepare bread. The CNN reported that potatoes are nowadays luxury in Nagorno-Karabakh. Food is being rationed and residents use vouchers for limited supplies of essential products. In addition, nearly 7,000 children are deprived of the right to education as preschools and kindergartens across Nagorno-Karabakh have been closed due to food shortages and disruption of energy supplies by Azerbaijan.

The objective of Azerbaijan is clear - to deprive the people of Nagorno-Karabakh from all means of subsistence and to finalize its plan of ethnic cleansing.

I thank you.
