Delivered by Ms. Armine Petrosyan, Second Secretary

President,

COVID-19 pandemic had affected the right to education causing temporarily closure of educational institutions. As a result, education had changed dramatically with the distinctive rise of e-learning.

Emergency situations such as conflicts can also cause severe disruption to educational services.

The war unleashed by Azerbaijan against Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2020 created new challenges affecting the safety, availability and accessibility of the right to education. About 30.000 schoolchildren and students were deprived of their right to education, 12 kindergartens and 71 schools were damaged or destroyed. Hundreds of children are deprived of continuing their education in around 108 schools and kindergartens since they are located in the territories of Nagorno-Karabakh ethnically cleansed from Armenians.

The Ministry of Education of Armenia with the support of the UNICEF Armenia adjusted its programs to address the emerging humanitarian needs. National education system enabled all displaced Armenian children to access public schools at all levels. A wide range of strategies were employed, ranging from financial to technical, including strengthening the tools and methodologies for online teaching with the aim of ensuring that the affected children get access to basic social and child protection services, mental health and psychosocial support.

Thank you.
