Delivered by Mr. Henrik Yeritsyan, Second Secretary

Mr. President,

Armenia welcomes the Working group on discrimination against women and girls and thanks for its engagement with the Council. We took a careful note of the report presented by WG.

Discriminatory practices such as hindering the right to education, child, early and forced marriages and various forms of violence, disproportionally affect girls and may leave life-altering negative consequences for girls and deepen further inequality, lack of protection and injustice in society.

As hardships induced by pandemic reverted the hard-won gains for millions of girls, we strongly believe that more investment should be directed to expanding educational opportunities for the most vulnerable girls, especially those in humanitarian settings, residing in rural areas and conflict zones, girls belonging to marginalized groups. Educational institutions also have primarily role in fostering active citizenship and civic participation as well as in dismantling negative stereotypes that serve as stumbling blocks for young women to pursue careers in politics and STEM related areas. Last but not least we would like to highlight the importance of working with and raising the awareness among families – parents and caregivers on benefits of human rights education, activism and raising strong and responsible members of society.

I thank you.
