HRC 49: Interactive dialogue with the Special Representative of the Secretary General on Violence against Children, Ms. Najat Maalla M’jid

Delivered by Mrs. Zoya Stepanyan, First Secretary

Mr. President,

Armenia welcomes the Special Representative and thanks for the Report. We appreciate elaborations made on the linkages between sustainable development and integrated approaches to fight and prevent violence against children.

At national level, Armenia recently revised the Annual action plan for Child rights protection, and implemented concrete measures in this regard. We are glad to emphasize that Armenia’s commitments as an active member of Global Partnership to end violence against children, feature prominently across this and other strategic documents.

Madam Special Representative,

In your report, you point to the examples of collaboration between your mandate and the SRSG on Children and Armed Conflict. Such engagement would be particularly timely to draw the attention to the plight of children of Nagorno Karabakh as well as children residing in border regions of the Republic of Armenia. Both are subjected to human rights violations and malice intimidation tactics by Azerbaijan. In Nagorno Karabakh the aim is crystal clear – to spread fear and ethnically cleanse the remaining part of Nagorno Karabakh from its indigenous population. As we speak now, children of Nagorno-Karabakh are deprived of heating in their schools, homes and even in hospitals, since Azerbaijan has cut the gas supplies. Such wrongdoings should not go unchecked.

I thank you.
