HRC 4th Intersessional meeting for dialogue and cooperation on Human Rights and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

Investing in sustainable recovery, advancing gender equality and strengthening partnerships – Towards a renewed social contract anchored in human rights

Delivered by Zoya Stepanyan, First Secretary

Mr Chair,

Armenia thanks honorable speakers for their opening remarks.

Our distinguished panelists elaborated on several aspects and major conditionalities for what could be a small window of opportunity to emerge from the crises and built resilience for future possible shocks.

Today we touched upon two important tasks by the Secretary General – “Our common agenda” and “Call for action”. Build on the experience from our region we would also add the Secretary General’s global call for ceasefire, as rising insecurity and aggressive militarism threaten to create the points of no return for millions of people.

Major international rankings demonstrate that the significant progress, which Armenia registered in a number of human rights related areas, was sustainable even during the health care crises and the devastating consequences of war. At the same time, there is a growing need to center our recovery efforts on green economy, better healthcare and educational infrastructure and social services. As to the gender equality related tasks – researches show that a number of women entrepreneurs increased in recent years, still, there is a need for accelerating the access to finances for women. Another related area closely tied to gender equality – is the care sector, in particular recognition of informal work. Digital literacy proved to be crucial in COVID era. In our case, Armenia is going to build on   already high levels of women’s participation in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) and ICT related sectors.

Last, but not least, we view access to justice and effective redress as the most important prerequisites to maintain the rule of law, to ensure accountability and democratic order, as well as the public trust in institutions and governance systems.

Thank you.
