HRC 47th Session: Interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences

Delivered by Mrs. Zoya Stepanyan, First Secretary

Madam President,

Armenia thanks the Special Rapporteur for the presentation of her report. We took careful note of it.

Against the background of the recent sharp increase of violence against women and girls globally, aggravated by inability of law enforcement and protection systems to respond adequately, the attention to rape as one of the worst forms of violence, is pertinent.

We attach particular importance to consideration of issue in humanitarian perspective, as rape and other forms of gender based violence had long been instrumentalised by perpetrators as methods of war, genocides and other crimes against humanity.

Madam President,

Fight against gender based violence require holistic and cross-sectoral approach and coordination between law enforcement, health and social protection systems. Civil society and in some cases, private sector, are important partners in this regard.

Armenia is proud to note that of the one of the women-led social-entrepreneurship projects in Armenia resulted in development of the “Safe you” app, a free, anonymous and secured tool for victims of violence. It already proved to have life-saving effect and even helped to bring perpetrators to justice.

We are happy to note that in the course of recent years Armenia undertook number of legislative reforms which allowed to revisit the talking of domestic violence in general and in particular violence against women, and adopt more victim centered approach, among others, by dedicated schemes for financial support. Armenia will continue to employ human rights based approach to all outstanding issues while addressing violence against women.

I thank you.
